Delegates ask author to refine ban on holding multiple public offices

A resolution seeking to bar individuals from holding more than one public office prompted delegates to balance accountability and rural practicality before the measure moves forward.

Jonathan Peebles, the author, described the proposal as an ethics measure to avoid conflicts of interest, saying the appearance of concentrated power "damages public confidence" and urging delegates to "lead on ethics." Jen Otis, speaking for the resolutions committee, said the committee recommended returning the resolution to its maker so authors could consult rural districts and jurisdictions where multiple roles sometimes arise because of vacancies and limited candidate pools: "We just want our rural areas to be considered before we make things that could make things restrictive for them." Sasha Slayton and other speakers characterized the committee's return recommendation as a request for clarification and polishing rather than rejection.

Delegates were receptive to the principle of stronger ethical rules but agreed the draft needs more precise language to avoid unintended consequences in small jurisdictions. The committee invited the author to work with rural LDs and to resubmit a clarified proposal at a later meeting.
