Students present sustainability resolution; board discusses an audit and timeline to 2028

Two students presented a student-led sustainability resolution asking the Sunnyvale School District to adopt policies and programming that prioritize environmental literacy, green-career exploration and project-based learning.

“My name is Anvita Sinha, and I'm honored to speak in front of the board today,” Anvita said, explaining why she started a minimalism and sustainability club and why policy is necessary to scale student-led action across the district.

Ahan Jen, a rising Fremont Union High School District sophomore and co-director of youth nonprofit Conserve, explained how a similar student resolution passed at the high-school district and encouraged Sunnyvale to adopt the student-led policy. Trustees thanked the students and asked staff whether the resolution should include specific timelines and audit language. Staff said an energy-usage audit by 2028 had been discussed and that the audit would report districtwide energy and greenhouse-gas metrics and offsets implemented over the past five years.

Trustees requested more detail about the proposed student-led committee structure and grant resources; several trustees also suggested students present at elementary sites and recommended adding concrete targets to the resolution before returning it to the board.
