Mebane to replace turf on Community Park’s Field Number 1; work starts Aug. 10

Aaron Davis, a staff member, announced that the artificial turf on Field Number 1 at Mebane Community Park will be replaced, with work scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 10 and expected to finish by mid‑ to late September, weather permitting. "The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 10, with completion anticipated by mid to late September, weather and site conditions permitting," Davis said.

Davis said the park’s artificial turf system, installed in 2017 and opened to the public in late 2018, has seen heavy use — from open play and school activities to tournaments and year‑round play by the Mebane Youth Soccer Association — and that Field Number 1 has the highest level of activity. "After nearly 8 years of continuous play, it's time to replace the artificial turf surface," he said, adding the replacement will help "ensure the field continues to meet important safety and playability standards for the thousands of athletes, students, and community members who use it each year."

The contractor will focus on three tasks: testing the field’s drainage system; inspecting the shock pad under the turf; and replacing the turf and installing new infill. Davis said staging will be located in the overflow grass parking lot near the tree line and that most work will be conducted between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. until completion.

Davis thanked the community for patience during the work and said the city expects to reopen a refreshed Field Number 1 this fall.
