Commission votes to abandon dirt portion of Concord Road after hours of public comment

After extended public comment that ran for more than an hour, the Walker County Board of Commissioners voted to abandon the unimproved (dirt) portion of Concord Road. The record shows competing community views: nearby landowners argued closure would reduce dumping and nuisance traffic; other residents and medical professionals warned the closure would lengthen emergency response times and create safety risks, especially if a nearby bridge is under repair.

Jim Pope, an out-of-county speaker who has followed the issue, framed the safety concern in stark terms, telling commissioners: "I strongly urge you to keep Concord Road open," and describing scenarios in which alternate routes could be blocked during emergencies. Multiple neighbors countered that the road receives minimal county maintenance, has recurring dumping and that adjacent owners favor abandonment.

After deliberation a motion to abandon the specified dirt segment passed in voice vote; one commissioner announced an abstention during the roll call. The board directed staff to proceed with the abandonment process, consistent with state law and standard public-notice procedures.
