Monterey County had about $3.6 million in cannabis tax collections as of July 28, auditor reports

Kevin Tuohy of the Auditor-Controller’s office reported to the committee that, as of July 28, Monterey County had collected about $3,600,000 in cannabis tax revenue. He provided a breakdown across sources: approximately $965,000 for fiscal year 2025, more than $2,600,000 for fiscal year 2026, about $467,000 from dispensaries, roughly $2,000,000 from indoor and mixed-light cultivation, about $2,075 from manufacturing (transcript numeric appears truncated), $763,000 from nurseries and about $282,000 from outdoor cultivation.

“To maintain confidentiality of taxpayer information, we are unable to disclose the specific amounts or the number of delinquent business accounts,” Tuohy said. Staff and supervisors clarified the July 28 pull occurred before end-of-month receipts were posted; Michelle House and other staff said the committee will receive a full fiscal-year closeout and projection comparison in October. Michelle said the original projection had been $3.5 million but was revised to $3.2 million after early closures, and staff expect to present final figures at the October meeting.

Supervisors asked how the reported collections compared to projections; staff said they will present the projection and how the county performed in October. No changes to tax policy were proposed at the meeting.
