Committee backs 4‑way stop at County Trunk Highway intersection after crash study

Kevin, Marathon County highway staff, told the committee the intersection met the state crash warrant and that right‑angle crashes at the location were especially concerning, driving his recommendation for an all‑way stop at the intersection. He said vegetation along the northbound approach limits sight distance and that routine trimming has been only a temporary fix.

Kevin recommended the change after reviewing traffic‑volume and crash data and a study from EMCS. "My recommendation was to go with the always stop," he told the committee, citing the crash pattern and increasing side‑street traffic near new subdivisions. During discussion members clarified the county’s jurisdiction over the county road stop signs and noted that side streets (Tesh Lane and Terabani Drive) already had stop controls that would not change.

Supervisor Kelly moved to recommend modifying county ordinance section 7.04 to create a 4‑way stop at the intersection affecting the villages of Rothschild and Kronenwetter; Supervisor Greiner amended the motion to include authority to install a flashing stop sign at the county stop if requested by the villages. The motion, as amended, was seconded and carried by voice vote.

The committee will forward the committee recommendation to the county board for consideration and staff noted that any installation would follow jurisdictional sign controls and coordination with adjacent villages.
