Council hears street repair plan, opts to replace maintenance building roof

Street Superintendent Bill Whitesell told the council the chip seal project estimate came in lower than the original projection and that the department will use a more expensive oil with better results. Whitesell said several local streets are in poor condition and the crew will shape roads to improve drainage; he will consult the city’s engineer on standards to evaluate project outcomes.

Street Maintenance Worker Slater Storey presented a roof assessment showing two options: a $50,000 full roof replacement or a $14,500 repair. The council agreed replacement was the better long‑term option and instructed staff to budget for the full replacement. Whitesell also discussed ventilation improvements for the building and noted plans to coordinate some purchases with the Fire Department where feasible.

The council discussed long‑range transportation funding needs and Robertson said the Transportation Plan had suggested budgeting about $500,000 per year to address street conditions but that the city lacks resources for that level of investment without an additional funding source such as a bond.
