Sun Valley council holds closed session on hiring; plans June 2 follow-up and short-term contracts

At 4:41 p.m. on May 31 the Council reconvened and Council Member Brad DuFur moved to enter executive session "Pursuant to Idaho Code 74-206 section (a) To consider hiring a public officer, employee, staff member or individual agent, wherein the respective qualities of individuals are to be evaluated"; Council Member Michelle Griffith seconded the motion. A roll call vote was unanimous and the Council entered executive session at 4:43 p.m.; it reconvened in open session at 4:52 p.m.

The executive session was taken under the statutory authority the Council cited in the motion. After reconvening, council members discussed how they expected to proceed with the City Attorney hiring at the June 2 regular meeting. They agreed to enter short-term contracts with the selected attorney on two pending legal issues while continuing to negotiate a longer-term City Attorney contract and discussed amending the agenda to effectuate that approach. No hiring decision was announced in open session on May 31.

The statute the council cited—Idaho Code 74-206(1)(a)—allows governing bodies to hold closed deliberations when evaluating the qualifications of prospective public officers or employees. The Council's subsequent plan sets a near-term schedule for final selection and interim contracting to address immediate legal needs.
