Commission forwards West 2500 North Gateway Corridor rezone to city council after public input

The planning commission voted Aug. 6 to recommend that the city council adopt a city‑initiated zoning map amendment for the West 2500 North Gateway Corridor, forwarding changes to 16 full parcels and 14 partial parcels.

Scott (city planning staff) explained the action followed months of work to translate the general plan's long‑term vision for the corridor into an implementable ordinance called the Gateway Commercial West zone. He said earlier draft language prompted concerns from some property and business owners, and staff paused to revise the ordinance to address those concerns before applying the new zoning to properties. "Following the general plan adoption, we worked on creating new zoning classifications... but for the 2500 North Corridor, we created an ordinance," Scott said.

Craig Loosely, a small‑business stakeholder, spoke in favor of the revised approach and thanked staff and commissioners for stepping back to address business concerns. After closing the public hearing, Commissioner Porter moved and the commission approved forwarding a positive recommendation to council.
