Roanoke City Public Schools opened its new school year with a kickoff ceremony that featured drum lines, cheerleaders and remarks urging staff to "turn the page" into a year of renewed focus.
"I am excited to officially welcome you to the kickoff of the new school year," said Presenter (first speaking at SEG 001), calling for energy and unity as the district begins the term.
The event combined celebratory performances from Patrick Henry and William Fleming students with a series of staff and official remarks reviewing recent achievements and priorities for the year ahead. An agency official described reductions in chronic absenteeism and suspensions, praised preschool program performance and highlighted a multi-pronged approach that includes career-technical education and community partnerships.
The kickoff emphasized community and staff recognition: speakers repeatedly directed applause to teachers and staff both in the room and watching remotely. Attendees answered call-and-response prompts from the stage to underline collective ownership of recent gains and to frame the coming months as a collaborative effort.
