Committee hears about new VA/HUD programs that could expand homelessness help for veterans

Staff at AMVETS Post 50 told the Veterans Committee they have recently prevented homelessness for multiple veterans and their families through advocacy and retroactive-pay assistance. Steve, the commander and director reporting to the committee, said staff helped avoid temporary county housing for five veterans since the last meeting.

"We avoided 5 veterans total from needing to be placed in temporary housing through the county," Steve said while summarizing the office’s recent work. He added that staff will investigate several new VA programs and HUD VASH supportive-service offerings that the VA says may pay up to 10 months of rent, back utility bills and other supports. Steve said he would prepare a fuller report to the legislature on eligibility and any geographic limits.

Committee members welcomed the developments but asked staff to clarify eligibility criteria before outreach. The director emphasized that the VA’s proposed change to the definition of homelessness — expanding eligibility to veterans who lack a permanent home and are at risk within 30 days — could meaningfully increase access if local implementation permits it.
