Employee benefits costs spike in July snapshot; utilization drives medical claims higher

John provided the board a July snapshot of employee benefits showing medical claims of about $1.7 million through six weeks of the fiscal year and higher utilization compared with last year. "We're at $1,700,000, and I'll just tell you that purely based on utilization," John said, and reported medical utilization up about 44% in the one-month snapshot and prescription medical up about 39% in the same short period.

Board members asked whether the spike reflected a few large cases or a broader trend; John said it appears to be numerous larger cases across the membership and that the plan insures about 2,800 people including retirees. Staff cautioned that reimbursements and late credits (including a prescription rebate) will change next month's numbers and that if reconciliation with the clerk/treasurer shows additional needs, the item may be placed on the watch list.
