The commission approved a settlement of $135,857.80 with PPG Industries to resolve claims related to alleged overpayments tied to contaminated groundwater from a PPG site that enters the Cumberland wastewater system.
Attorney Beeman explained the county and the City of Cumberland had disputed PPG's claim that they were owed reimbursement for overpayment resulting from a faulty meter and alleged overbilling; staff negotiated a settlement that Beeman described as a fraction of PPG's asserted claim. Payment would represent a full and final release of potential claims by PPG against Allegheny County; the City of Cumberland approved a similar settlement. The county approved its portion by voice vote.
Commissioners indicated the settlement would allow both the county and city to close the matter and continue normal billing and treatment operations.
