The Dawson County Board of Commissioners voted Aug. 6 to adopt amendments to Chapter 1-21 that impose additional restrictions on data centers and incorporate environmental protections requested by state environmental staff.
Commissioner Stowers moved to approve “the amendments to Chapter 1 21 in relation to data centers and environmental protection changes,” and the motion received a second before the board voted to approve those two elements of the package. Richard, a county staff member who introduced the item, told commissioners the package had been pared down after public and advisory-committee input so the board could consider data-center restrictions and state-aligned environmental edits first.
Supporters on the board framed the vote as a targeted change rather than the sweeping rewrite originally proposed. Commissioner Gaines said the data-center restrictions and the environmental edits were “easy” and that the board was largely in agreement about the need to tighten controls; the chair and other commissioners signaled concern about advancing broader residential and commercial rules without concurrent work on the comprehensive plan.
The board’s action applies only to the data-center and environmental components of the proposed text amendment; residential and some commercial changes were separately tabled for up to one year. The county staff recommended the split after receiving input from the long-range planning committee, the county attorney’s office and members of the public.
