Councilwoman Lutz updated the board on Pine Plains School District's organizational review, which the district is conducting because enrollment has declined while assessed property values have risen, producing a high 'wealth ratio' that reduces state foundational aid.
Lutz summarized three scenarios presented by the district: keep the current configuration (which could require an approximate 23% tax increase to cover lost aid), close one elementary school and consolidate grades, or close two elementary buildings and consolidate into a single junior/senior high campus. "Currently, the school gets $8,000,000 in aid... and it could go down to $4,000,000," Lutz said, explaining the district might need to choose a model by January 2026. The board encouraged residents to review the district slide deck and complete the district survey posted online.
Residents asked how the wealth ratio is calculated and whether district size and transportation costs factor into decisions. Lutz said the district will choose a scenario after monitoring state funding decisions and public input. The town clerk said she would distribute the district's survey to town residents.
