The board recognized a recent donation of basketball shoes to Cypress High School made by Max Brezza, an alumnus and the Los Angeles Clippers’ executive director of team operations, and heard a presentation on district athletics by Jeff Russell, the district athletic director.
The board expressed appreciation for Brezza’s gift and for the athletic department’s work. Russell outlined participation metrics and program expansion: “We currently offer 14 sports at the junior highs” and the district reported about 5,669 junior-high athlete participations last year and 7,211 student-athletes at the high-school level, with 441 total teams. He also noted program additions including girls flag football, CIF stunt cheer, swim relays and cross-country/track championship events, and asked the board to consider conversations about uniform rotations to reduce fundraising burdens for families.
Trustees thanked staff and recognized coaches, parents and volunteers for their support. The board’s remarks and the recognition were part of the meeting’s opening presentation items.
