Commissioners, volunteers clash over ALS requirement and role of BLS volunteers in mutual aid

Commissioners and volunteer ambulance representatives debated the county’s reliance on ALS mutual-aid agreements and whether BLS volunteers from nearby townships should be allowed to respond when county ALS units are unavailable. Chair (S1) emphasized county liability and the legal requirement that mutual-aid agreements be ALS: "The bottom line is it's ALS… And due to liability, we can't change it."

Volunteers and ambulance representatives countered that timeliness and patient advocacy should guide responses. One representative (S4) argued that a closer BLS unit getting a patient to definitive care sooner could be lifesaving and cited multiple examples of long response times when outside agencies were called in. Speakers also described chronic volunteer shortages and use of chase cars as operational limitations.
