During the site visit to Robert Frost Elementary, staff described the school's literacy schedule and how interventions are layered to meet student needs. "For our tier 1 supports, all of our students are receiving 120 minutes of literacy instruction every single day," the presenter said, adding that the daily block is composed of 90 minutes of whole-group instruction and an additional 30 minutes of explicit phonics instruction using district-adopted curricula.
The presenter identified UFLI as the primary phonics program for second grade and 95% for grades three through five. For students who need more support, the school schedules an extra 30-minute intervention block during "what I need" time so there is no interruption to core instruction or specials. Staff said Tier 2 interventions typically target about 20% of students; Tier 3 intensive interventions reach roughly 5 of students and are progress-monitored weekly.
The presenter also described classroom practices where reading specialists and teachers coordinate so that intervention lessons can follow students between classrooms, and promised classroom videos to illustrate the model.
