Airport manager says aviation camp was 'a success' and seeks earlier planning, rain‑out date

The Lawrence Regional Airport advisory board heard an after‑action review of the aviation camp on July 13 and agreed the event was successful but should be better organized in future years.

Airport manager (speaker 4) summarized the review, saying "the camp was determined to be a success, but there were several areas of, opportunities that were identified to make make sure it's been even better." Board members discussed setting a formal rain‑out date, improving promotion via parks and recreation and local schools, and telling past campers' stories to build interest. Manager (speaker 4) said earlier planning for 2027 would make it possible to expand capacity and accommodate more participants.

A committee member (speaker 5) urged appointing a single camp director with aviation knowledge so parents know who is in charge and don’t need to remain on site during weather disruptions. The board noted possible conflicts with KU graduations and school calendars and discussed moving the event as early as April to avoid clashes.

Next steps: staff will begin earlier planning for 2027, explore partnerships with tech schools and aviation programs, and return with proposed dates and a plan to ensure aircraft ride availability.
