Pearland Chamber president urges council to back destination-style development

Jim Johnson, identified in the meeting as President and CEO of the Pearland Chamber of Commerce, gave the lone public comment at the special Pearland City Council meeting and urged support for a proposed development. He told the council the Chamber supports projects that "create jobs, strengthen and reverse our tax base, and provide high quality places where residents, businesses, and visitors can gather."

Johnson said the proposal could "create a true destination within Pearland by by combining commercial activity, recreation, open spaces, and opportunities for community connection," and that this direction aligns with the Chamber's strategic plan emphasizing thoughtful growth and connectivity. He also invited council members to the Chamber's "meet the leaders with elected officials" event on Sept. 23 at University of Houston–Clear Lake at Pearland. The comment period included about 3 minutes and 52 seconds remaining on his allotted five-minute slot.

The public comment was the only citizen testimony during the meeting; council proceeded to an executive session afterward to discuss economic development negotiations.
