City staff to review new Florida statute on residential synthetic turf; local code updates planned

City planning staff informed the board that a recent Florida statute on synthetic turf for residential properties requires review and potential local regulatory changes. Director Kent Wallen said staff will examine the statute's language and prepare permitting and code updates consistent with other communities.

Wallen cautioned that state law contains exemptions and preemptions that limit local authority; staff plans to incorporate those statutory constraints into the city's revised regulations and permitting processes. "We're working on some regulations there consistent with other communities as well," he said. The board did not take formal action; the item was an informational briefing and will return as staff prepares draft code language.
