Alabama Public Television faces multi‑million dollar shortfall as CPB/PBS funding changes loom

Alabama Public Television staff told the board that an expected reduction in CPB funding, together with the exhaustion of roughly $400,000 in COVID‑relief revenue used in recent budgets, leaves a material budget shortfall for fiscal 2026.

"The 2,800,000 that we're losing in CPB funding, that's another $400,000 of revenue that we're not gonna have this year," William (staff presenter) said, summarizing the projected gap and ongoing budget review. Staff said they are evaluating reserves, potential state requests and other short‑term measures to bridge the gap into the 2027 budget cycle.

Board members pressed staff on contingency options and on how national programming contracts might affect state support. William said APT is in active discussions with PBS and CPB representatives; he noted the $500,000 next‑generation warning system grant from CPB is currently frozen pending federal decisions, and that Congress recently appropriated additional funds for the larger program but APT has not yet received disbursement guidance.

The board did not take a binding financial action during the meeting; staff said they would continue budget reviews and bring options back to the board when available.
