Tree Board explores National Wildlife Federation certification and farmer's-market outreach

Leslie Shadd told the board she is working with the sustainability commission to pursue community-wildlife-habitat certification through the National Wildlife Federation and suggested compiling points from the board's planting and education efforts.

Board members discussed outreach plans including tabling at farmers markets (dates mentioned in August), partnering with the sustainability commission at those events, and working with the National Honor Society at Michigan City High School if site approval is secured from the principal. The board also flagged volunteer opportunities, school plantings, and the possibility of certifying private yards and community sites as part of the certification effort.

Members said the board can submit planting dates and engagement activities as evidence for certification points and that the Trail Creek Watershed Partnership and other local groups might be partners for outreach and additional points.
