Historians and longtime volunteers urge careful replacement or contextualization of Salem's seal

Several community historians and longtime volunteers told the committee the seal should be treated as an aspirational symbol tied to maritime history and the city's development. Darlene Millis, a local historian, said, "the city seal is aspirational," and asked the council to state clearly what aspirational image would take its place.

Jeff Cohen and Emmylou Manuel urged careful deliberation and offered alternatives such as maritime elements, pepper branch imagery or a dove to represent peace. Those speakers asked the council to ensure any new design or added interpretation would capture Salem's history without erasing context. The task force's minority report from credentialed historians was also placed on the council's desk for members to review.
