Council explains timing for seating and swearing-in after canvass

A council member asked for clarification on when newly elected council members will be seated and officially sworn in following the canvas of the primary election. The council member asked for explanation of report categories (such as 'undervotes' and 'contest' totals) and when the seating occurs.

Mayor Norm Simpson responded that seating and swearing-in follow statutory canvassing procedures and the town's practice: "By statute and also by town code, the seating of the candidates follows the actual canvassing of the general ... So ours takes place immediately following the general election," he said. The mayor added that some towns write their code to delay seating until Jan. 1, but Quartzsite does not follow that practice.
