Council rejects variance request to allow home addition at 259 North Greenwood

A petition to allow a building addition closer to the side property line at 259 North Greenwood Avenue failed in committee and again when considered by the full council.

Planning staff described the request as an addition to the principal structure with implications for setbacks and lot conformity; the petitioner, Maria Picarska, said the structure was needed to protect her car from winter damage: "I just need something for my car, because last month... it damaged my car." Neighbors and several council members raised concerns about visual character, nonconforming adjacent properties, and the narrowness of the lot. The committee voted against the item and pulled it from the consent agenda for standing-committee review; when the matter returned to council the motion failed on roll call.

Council members emphasized the importance of consistency with existing code and the concerns of immediate neighbors when considering setback exceptions. The item will be tracked for any future resubmission or revised proposal.
