Emergency condemnation at 229 Beale Street; commission orders demolition estimates

Staff informed the commission that on July 7 emergency responders found a gas leak and an unresponsive person inside a home at 229 Beale Street; staff initiated an emergency condemnation to prevent habitation and recommended demolition estimates because the structure is unsafe.

As staff described the incident: "They had a gas leak on the inside of the house, and I went out there...they had a person that had been, passed out." The commission approved the recommendation to estimate demolition costs and bring estimates to the Sept. 1 meeting, and staff said they would contact utilities to disconnect service given the emergency condemnation.
