Board authorizes bonding for jail repairs: grinder pumps and new fire alarm system

The Westchester County Board of Legislators voted Aug. 3 to authorize $500,000 in bonds to replace sewer grinder pumps at the county correctional facility and separately approved an amended bond of $7,960,000 to replace the jail's fire alarm system.

"The existing fire alarm system has reached the end of its useful life and is no longer supported by the manufacturer, so we need to switch out parts," said Legislator Woodson Samuels, noting that at times replacement parts are no longer available. The board approved the amended bond for the fire alarm replacement 15–0.

The $500,000 authorization for sewer grinder pumps was described as a six-month construction project; both items were discussed in Budget and Appropriations and Public Safety and Veterans committees before the full board vote.

Both measures passed unanimously on recorded votes and were presented as necessary maintenance to ensure public-safety and code compliance at the facility.
