Commissioners defer at-large appointment process, agree to vet candidates

During consideration of appointment items, commissioners debated how to identify and select at-large members for boards and commissions. One commissioner described the traditional process as each commissioner providing recommendations and then choosing among them; another suggested the chair and vice chair could make initial at-large designations for the first cycle.

"Well, traditionally, the at large positions, all 3 county commissioners will give their recommendations if they have one. And between the 3 county commissioners, we decide who that at large person is," a commissioner said, advocating for a collaborative vetting approach. After discussion, the board moved to defer action on Item A5 to allow staff and commissioners to develop a formal process for selecting at-large members.

Why it matters: how at-large seats are filled affects representation and transparency for boards that advise or make policy recommendations to the BOCC. The board’s decision to defer is meant to produce a consistent vetting procedure rather than ad hoc selections.
