Commission authorizes survey, abstract for Woodlake parcel amid safety and reuse concerns

The Benson County Commission voted to authorize a property survey and obtain an updated abstract for the county-owned Woodlake house and surrounding parcel to clarify title and possible restrictions.

Commissioners and staff described recurring parties and safety concerns at the Woodlake public beach and debated management options. Chair said having someone live in the house could reduce vandalism and open-drug use; county staff suggested installing cameras to deter weekend parties and enable quicker responses by law enforcement. "The idea of cameras, and that way, the sheriff could just check and see," the Chair said during discussion of options.

Staff also reported informal contact with the North Dakota Game and Fish indicating possible interest in the property, but that Bismarck-level approval would be required. County counsel recommended starting with a survey and an updated title abstract to reveal any deed restrictions or easements before the board considers sale, lease or alternative uses. The motion to begin the survey and title work was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
