Sheriff's office reports staffing progress; commissioners ask about shared cameras for Woodlake

The Benson County sheriff's representative reported July activity and staffing updates, and commissioners asked the department to explore camera options to help manage recurring weekend parties at Woodlake.

Laura, speaking for the sheriff's office, said the department logged "297 documented" calls for service in July, a deputy is scheduled to graduate Aug. 21, and staff are interviewing candidates for administrative and patrol roles. She described staffing rotations and short staffing as limiting routine patrols during weekend incidents. Commissioners proposed a camera at Woodlake that both tribal police and county deputies could access as an early-warning tool; the Chair said the county would check with the tribal police and BIA about shared access and logistics. "I can reach out to whoever's acting police chief of this week," Laura said when asked to coordinate.

The board did not authorize an immediate purchase but asked staff to check feasibility and report back at the next meeting.
