Council delays rule change that would limit members to chairing one committee

Councilors spent an extended portion of the meeting debating a proposed rules amendment that would prevent any single council member from serving as chair of more than one standing committee at a time.

Supporters said the change would promote shared responsibility and create leadership opportunities for newer members; an amendment was proposed that any adoption should not take effect until the next council term. Opponents argued the rule could force experienced chairs off committees mid‑term, create operational disruption and reduce flexibility when few members are willing to chair certain bodies. After substantial discussion — including proposals to add carve-outs for instances where no other member is available — Councilor Peake moved and the council voted to continue the item to the next meeting so members could reflect on amendments and implementation details.
