Council opts to delay appointing charter review commission until 2027 to manage cost and workload

City staff recommended forming a Charter Review Commission to examine possible updates to the city charter, including topics such as public comment language, bonding requirements, council resignation procedures and eligibility rules for office holders. The mayor proposed a later start to give the commission sufficient time and to avoid an immediate election cost. "So I will, make a note to bring this back to a meeting in January 2027," the mayor said.

Council members discussed the tradeoffs of convening the commission now and banking its recommendations versus waiting closer to an election to reduce costs and voter fatigue. Several council members favored delaying appointments until mid- to late 2027 so the commission could work over a full 12-month period and ballot propositions would align with a later election cycle.
