HRSA says care will continue while agencies monitor and move to replace the decertified OPO

Tom Ingalls, who identified himself as the administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, said HRSA has overseen a modernization of the organ transplant system and has worked with the OPTN to implement a comprehensive corrective action plan. He said HRSA coordinated with CMS to analyze operations and to assess corrective actions but that significant patient-safety concerns persisted despite repeated opportunities to improve.

“Care will still be offered to the patients that are served by this organization. That will not stop,” Ingalls said, adding that HRSA and CMS will continue to closely monitor the organization while CMS proceeds with a process to replace it. Officials said the steps are intended to protect patient safety during the transition.
