Officials outline early-voting schedule and explain new state restriction on officials near polling places

Town staff told the board that early voting for the Aug. 11 state primary is underway and that the meeting packet includes seven days of early voting with general hours of 10 a.m.–6 p.m., with extended hours (8 a.m.–8 p.m.) on two days as listed in the packet.

Staff also briefed the board on a July 1 amendment to state election law. As recorded, the staff explanation said the amendment “prohibits any federal, state, which would include municipal law enforcement or anybody directing law enforcement…from being within 250 feet of an election site,” and that the definition of election site is broad and includes drop boxes. The Secretary of State issued guidance clarifying exceptions and said moderators have authority to grant permission for individuals who otherwise would be precluded by the statute in narrowly defined circumstances.

Staff advised that more detailed guidance from the Secretary of State is available and that election officials are working with law enforcement to implement the rules; the board did not take further action but was advised to consult the Secretary of State’s letter included in the packet for operational questions.
