Solid‑waste director: electronics recycling up, county to start mattress recycling program

Solid Waste Director Matt Davis presented operations and program updates to the committee, highlighting increased electronics recycling and a forthcoming mattress‑recycling program.

"In the 1st 6 months of 2026, we've collected 54.3 tons of electronics recycling," Davis said, and he credited City eWaste of Franklin as a partner that has helped the county handle higher volumes at three drop‑off sites. Davis reported countywide figures for July that included 145.9 tons of brush and 1,435 tires processed; the transfer station processed 10,446.87 tons of waste for the month and the recycling rate for July was 12.9%.

On mattresses, Davis said attendants’ training is complete and supporting infrastructure is nearly installed; the vendor charges $25 per mattress or box spring and the county does not retain that fee. Commissioners asked whether the vendor built the ramps and whether the vendor carries liability insurance; Davis said the ramp was provided and the contractor's insurance is written into the county contract. He offered to follow up with exact figures on any cost liability related to illegally dumped mattresses.
