Denmark to host high-level Security Council debate on conflict and hunger on Aug. 25

Ambassador Christina Marcus Lesson said Denmark will host a high-level open debate on conflict and hunger on Aug. 25 intended to examine how the Security Council can better implement "resolution 24 17." She described the session as a chance for the membership to discuss links between armed conflict and rising food insecurity.

Lesson said the event will include briefers the mission described as the Secretary-General and the Danish foreign minister and that Denmark serves as a co-focal point with Bahrain on conflict and hunger. She compared the initiative to the Black Sea Grain initiative and said Denmark supports Secretariat efforts to explore mechanisms for food, fertilizer and energy supplies amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

"It's going to be a high level open debate on conflict and hunger," Lesson said, adding the goal is to "see those links" between conflict and hunger and to enable the wider UN membership to discuss them.

The ambassador cautioned the effectiveness of any mechanism would likely depend on outcomes in parallel negotiating tracks and that more precise proposals from the Secretariat are awaited.
