Stevenson-Carson board adopts student representative plan, suspends related policies

The Stevenson-Carson School District Board of Directors approved a new student representative plan and suspended two existing student-representative policies at its Aug. 12, 2021 meeting.

Superintendent Ingrid Colvard presented the plan, saying the district would have “student representatives from each of the 4 buildings attending meetings 4 times a year to bring reports to the board.” The proposal calls for two students at each meeting — one from Stevenson High School and one from another building — and is intended to provide routine student reports rather than a standing voting position.

The board took two formal actions to clear the way for the interim arrangement. Dan Fuller moved to suspend Policy 1250 (Student Board Representative and Related Procedures and Forms); Jon Paul Anderson seconded and the motion carried. Jon Paul Anderson then moved to suspend Policy 1116 (Student Board Representative); Dan Fuller seconded and the motion carried. The motions were recorded as carried in the minutes; specific roll-call tallies were not specified in the minutes.

The board did not adopt a permanent change to governance language at this meeting; the suspensions were recorded as a procedural step to allow student participation under the new schedule. The superintendent said the program would begin with student reports at four meetings per year.
