ESD 112 presents best practices on board and superintendent roles

Mike Nerland of Educational Service District (ESD) 112 led a discussion for the board on the distinct duties of school board members and the superintendent. Nerland outlined both individual responsibilities and how the board and superintendent should function together as a governance team.

He described best practices observed in effective school boards and clarified where the superintendent’s administrative authority begins and where the board’s policy-setting role is centered. Board members heard recommendations intended to improve collaboration and reduce role confusion between elected members and district leadership.
