Sun Valley council weighs roundabout and targeted design changes for City Hall intersection

Mayor Peter Hendricks and the Sun Valley City Council spent the bulk of a Jan. 28 special meeting discussing how to redesign the City Hall intersection and what elements to include in the preferred plan. Council Member Jane Conard said she favors the roundabout option and asked staff to provide additional data to support the choice.

City Engineer Roberts reviewed the presented alternatives and identified several critical concerns. Council members suggested combining elements of designs labeled 1A and 3A and agreed on a set of directions for staff: add two parking spaces near City Hall if feasible; reduce the size of a proposed retaining wall for the option that includes one; explore adding dedicated parking for maintenance vehicles behind the Streets Department; realign Old Dollar Road where it approaches the junction; and move the multi‑use path to the far side of the roadway in the segment before the bridge. Council also asked staff to prepare a cost estimate for adding a high‑speed downhill bike lane on Elkhorn Road.

City Engineer Roberts told the council the project is slated for summer 2021 and staff will return with refined drawings and cost estimates. The council did not take a formal construction vote at the special meeting; members provided direction for further study and design work.
