Police chief urges new officer, specialized vehicle and incentive pay in budget review

Police Chief Crawford presented the Sun Valley Police Department’s budget in detail, saying the department saw an increase in arrests during the pandemic and is requesting funding for an additional sworn officer. He also recommended purchasing a specialized police vehicle and proposed an incentive program to reward officers for continued training and years of service.

The chief described the high cost of the new vehicle as driven by specialized equipment required for patrol duties. Council members were asked to consider trimming other department line items as the mayor requested. The budget discussion did not include a formal vote or ordinance; Crawford asked council to refine funding levels during the department-by-department budget process.
