Commission approves two right-of-way abandonments in Brookings and Turner counties

John Keyes, Program Manager for the Office of Right of Way, presented two requests for Commission approval to abandon Department‑acquired right‑of‑way parcels no longer needed for highway purposes. The first parcel is Lot A in Lot H2 in the SE1/4 of Section 17 in Brookings County (0.69 acre) located on the south side of Hwy 13 near Elkton; the Department recommended abandonment based on regional staff review.

The second request covered two small parcels in Turner County (a 0.01‑acre parcel in Section 1 and a 1.91‑acre parcel in Section 3) near US Hwy 18 and the US 18/Hwy 19 intersection; the Mitchell Region and Yankton Area advised these properties are no longer needed and recommended abandonment. Motions to approve the abandonments were made and seconded, the roll‑call votes were unanimous, and the Commission adopted RESOLUTIONS #2026–7.2 and #2026–7.3.

The minutes record the Commission’s approval but do not include the Department’s conveyance steps, any conditions of conveyance, or subsequent actions to transfer title or publish notices; those recording and conveyance steps are handled administratively by the Office of Right of Way following Commission authorization.
