Council approves year-round no-parking zone on 26th Street by Abraham Lincoln Elementary

A resolution to establish a year-round no-parking, no-stopping and no-standing zone on the south side of 26th Street adjacent to Abraham Lincoln Elementary was approved by the Common Council Aug. 3.

The school's request — provided to the council through the Public Safety Committee — cited bus-loading, unloading and parent drop-off conflicts as the reason for the change. "Abraham Lincoln School has reviewed its bus loading and unloading zones and parent drop off areas to improve traffic flow and student safety," the presenter stated as the resolution was read.

The resolution repeals the existing 15-minute parking zone along a specified segment of 26th Street and directs the Department of Public Works to install the appropriate traffic-control signs. Councilors moved, seconded and approved the measure by roll call.

Why it matters: The change is aimed at improving visibility and traffic flow at a school drop-off area, reducing conflicts between buses and parent vehicles.

What's next: The Department of Public Works will implement signage and update the city's traffic-control maps as directed in the resolution.
