Council says TxDOT meeting showed 'pathway' to signalization at Preston Crossing

Staff reported that recent discussions with TxDOT and the local independent school district produced a clearer path toward traffic signalization at Preston Crossing (US 121), though staff cautioned the recommended signal infrastructure would be more permanent and costlier than temporary measures.

"It actually gave us, a pathway to signalization, I would say," staff said when summarizing the TxDOT meeting. Council and staff discussed the warrant system TxDOT uses for signals and learned that meeting the lowest tier of warrant criteria could qualify the location for signalization. Staff cautioned that TxDOT would favor permanent metal poles and foundation work, which carry higher cost and longer lead times.

Staff also noted a lower-cost option for a crosswalk — a flashing beacon — and estimated installation at roughly $10,000–$15,000. Council asked staff to continue coordinating with TxDOT and the school district on placement and timing and to incorporate signalization costs into future budget discussions or grant-seeking as appropriate.
