Mayor Cohen opened the May 16 council meeting by recognizing the girls basketball team from Palatine's high school for finishing second at the IHSA state finals on March 5, 2016. He said the team represented the village "throughout the United States" and noted their achievements both in athletics and academics. The mayor presented certificates of recognition to players and coaches for the season-long success.
Coach Yates, who addressed the council, summarized the team's season and listed individual accomplishments and college commitments for several players. "Last year, we finished 2nd in state," he said, adding that the team used low rankings and skepticism as motivation and that multiple players have committed to collegiate programs. The mayor and council thanked the players, coaches and families for representing Palatine and encouraged continued success next year.
