Council approves variance allowing overhead telecom cable runs on existing poles for two projects

The Infrastructure & Environment Committee approved a variance to permit installation of overhead communication cable on existing power poles for two projects whose aerial cable runs would exceed 2,600 feet. Staff explained the projects will interconnect runs along the Quintin Road corridor and Dundee Road and tie into existing runs and cell towers in the area; both Verizon and Wide Open West are involved in the projects. The committee voted to advance the variance to the council consent agenda and it was approved without public objection.

Staff noted the village has historically required variances where aerial runs exceed 2,600 feet; applicants preferentially install overhead cable where existing poles are present and go underground where poles are not available. A representative from Wide Open West was present to answer technical questions, and the committee placed the measure on the consent agenda.
