The California Assembly adopted Assembly Concurrent Resolution 230 on Thursday to recognize California Firefighter Appreciation Month in October 2026 and to designate Oct. 3 as California Firefighters Memorial Day.
Assemblymember Schiavo, sponsor of ACR 230, told the chamber that firefighters respond to millions of calls for service and that the resolution would honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice; she noted that 37 names would be added to the California Firefighters Memorial wall this year. "For from devastating wildfires to daily emergencies, our California firefighters bravely answer 3,000,000 calls for service each year," she said. Members including Assemblymember Haney and Assemblymember Pacheco added remarks about wildfire responses, occupational hazards including exposure to carcinogens, and the importance of ensuring firefighters’ health and safety.
The resolution was adopted by voice vote after the clerk recorded co-authors; members present from local fire organizations were recognized and thanked for their service. The measure is ceremonial and intended to support recognition and remembrance rather than create funding or regulatory changes.
