Board prioritizes early literacy and questions middle-school intervention rollout

The board held an extended discussion of "1st instruction," identifying early literacy as a central priority for the coming year and asking for clearer measures of progress. Melissa (S6) told trustees the plan's literacy priority is that "all students read and comprehend at or above grade level with a focus on early literacy," and outlined actions such as reading interventions and program adoptions.

Trustees pressed staff on whether the district is focusing enough on elementary prevention so students do not arrive at middle school already behind. A trustee (S3) said middle-school intervention alone can remove access to electives and noted the importance of stronger elementary supports. Melissa and other staff explained that a proposed reading intervention class at the middle school was not advanced for 26–27 because master scheduling had already been set and administrators judged the rollout would not have been thoughtful or sustainable that year.
