Committee forwards zoning text amendments to allow alkaline hydrolysis and relax some accessory-structure separations

The committee reviewed a proposed ordinance amendment to the village zoning code (Article 3, Section 3.02 and Article 11 sections referenced by staff) that would revise several definitions and permitted uses.

Staff explained one change would remove an older separation requirement for open-air accessory structures such as gazebos or pergolas based on modern construction and fire-prevention standards. A second change would add alkaline hydrolysis — a water-based cremation technology — as an accessory use for funeral homes, subject to the village permitting process, building permits, business-license amendment and discharge thresholds set by the Metropolitan Reclamation District. Staff said funeral-home operators in other counties meet the thresholds and the village can condition permits as needed. The committee moved and seconded the ordinance amendment and voted to place it on the consent agenda.

Committee members asked clarifying questions about regulation and permitting; staff said any facility would still be reviewed through normal permits and could be conditioned to meet local and metropolitan reclamation rules.
