The Police Policy and Code Services Committee recommended approval May 7 of a special-use ordinance to permit an indoor sports and recreation facility at 553 E. Dundee Road after petitioner representatives described programming aimed at children on the autism spectrum.
Petitioner Jason Ori told the committee the group had obtained a demolition permit and planned to open by Aug. 15. Mary Alice Gogan and Jill Gilligan, representing the business, said the operation — branded 'We Rock' in other markets — would offer training and children's parties with specialized programming for autistic children as well as neurotypical peers. "It's an autism based gym to Palatine, Chicago land areas," Gogan said, and the petitioners reported strong community interest and media attention since the zoning board of appeals unanimously recommended approval.
Zoning staff reviewed parking and floor-plan matters and recommended approval. Committee Chair Councilman Lamberin placed the item on the consent agenda for council consideration later in the evening.
